NanoEduca . Programme for the introduction of nanoscience and nanotechnology to middle and high school students

Objectives Methodology Date Fee Location

 Objectives

The nanotechnology is not the future, is the present. Currently, there is a great number of economic investments and consumer products available in the market derived of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N & N).
The introduction of concepts of N&N is not an easy task, because big parts of the scientific community use a specific and extremely dense terminology, which is generally only available in English. Because of this, and the current and future impact that these technologies will have on our lives is why divulgation activities, information and training in N&N are necessary. Then, is indispensable to promote activities that are playful without losing the conceptual part, to bring nanoscience and nanotechnology to population and prepare them to understand, and help students and teachers to decide knowingly on their future use.
To bring education to N&N, Universitat de Barcelona has designed a program based on the introduction of nanotechnology in the classroom, the program NanoEduca.

 Methodology

The course is divided in two phases:

Phase I. Divided in two sub-modules

• Module 1: Theoretical
• Module 2: Practical

With modules 1 and 2 we want to familiarize the teachers with the tools, processes and language of nanoscience and nanotechnology and create modules and workshops for teachers to apply in the classroom. The program is designed for the diffusion of learning modules through a website made for this purpose, visiting universities and technology centers, and through professional development workshops. All these actions are made to increase awareness and participation of general public in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Phase II

During the second semester of the academic year (May 2015). The secondary school teachers work with their students doing experiments presented in a kit format on different aspects of nanotechnology (nanomaterials, measures, risks and benefits, etc). This will allow them to transmit the acquired knowledge in the module 1, both from a theoretical and practical view. Teachers also have a tutorial that includes a selection of experiments of all kinds, in writing or multimedia format to facilitate activities in the classroom.
The sessions will finish with a scientific conference, which will take place in the Universitat de Barcelona, where the students will present the different activities performed in class, in poster format. The seminar will be supervised by experts in nanotechnology of the Universitat de Barcelona.
