The Electron Microscopy applied to Materials Unit (UMEAP) of the CCiTUB is one of the 4 nodes of the ICTS ELECMI together with the CNME (Spanish National Centre for Electron Microscopy) of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the LMA (Advanced Microscopy Laboratory) of the Universidad de Zaragoza and the DME (Elecron Microscopy Division) of the Universidad de Cádiz.

It has staff highly specialized in transmission electron microscopy characterisation techniques and related analytical techniques (EELS and EDXS spectroscopy), as well as in advanced data processing and simulation. It also has beam precession systems (for 3D electron diffraction, electron crystallography, crystalline phase detection and orientation and stress maps) and carries specific samples for in situ microscopy and electron tomography.

How to access

To access the services of the ICTS ELECMI of the CCiTUB, two access modes are offered:

  1. On-demand access: access to the ICTS equipment is the same as for any other service offered by the CCiTUB. Firstly, it is necessary to to register as a user of the CCiTUB and then contact the technical units of which you need service.

  2. Open Competitive Access Regime: access to the use of infrastructures is regulated by a public 'Access Protocol' describing the mechanism and the access criteria and which is regulated through an external scientific committee through a transparent and independent evaluation process.

Competitive open access

The UMEAP node offers open and competitive access to researchers from public or private research centers, as well as companies. Competitive Open Access is regulated by an external scientific committee through a transparent and independent evaluation process.

Access is permanently open. In order to access to the ICTS, the user must fill in the UMEAP online access form. If the user is not sure which is the most appropriate instrument to use, they can contact the UMEAP staff who will advise on the most appropriate equipment.

The proposal obtained through the online Access Application Form will be evaluated by the Access Committee, which is composed by independent experts in the technics that are offered by the CCiTUB. The Access Committee will evaluate the technological and scientific quality and viability of the proposals received.

User will receive an email with the approval/rejection of the proposal. Rejection of a proposal will always be accompanied by a report written by the referees of the access committee outlining the reasons for rejection. Where appropriate, the report will also include recommendations and suggestions for improvement and resubmission of a new proposal for accessing to the ICTS equipment.
