Integrative Structured Biology Symposium

On November 14th and 15th, the Integrative Structural Biology Symposium took place, marking the first event its kind organized by the Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure Network (ISBIN).

At the conference, which was introduced by PhD. Miquel Pons from the University of Barcelona, PhD. Maria Solà from the IBMB-CSIC and PhD. Judith Juanhuix from the Alba Synchrotron, brought together nearly 150 researchers from various scientific disciplines. Sixteen (16) international experts from structural biology institutions presented the latest advances in the integrated use of NMR, cryo-electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation techniques and computational approaches.

The symposium showcased the latest advancements in the study of complex biological systems with atomic resolution, while preserving the essential dynamics required for their functionality under natural conditions. The new NMR facilities at the University of Barcelona, along with the new beamlines at the Alba Synchrotron and the cryo-electron microscopy equipment at IBMB-CSIC, establish Catalonia as a structural biology hub in Southern Europe.

During the first day, participants had the opportunity to visit the facilities of the new 1.0 GHz NMR equipment at the NMR laboratory of the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB), located at the PCB. The second day ended with visits to the beamlines of the Alba Synchrotron and the new 200 kV cryo-microscope at IBMB-CSIC.

The symposium highlighted the importance of collaborative work between institutions to advance science in Catalonia, as well as the need for integration with scientific projects and platforms such as Remote NMR and INSTRUCT.

ISBIN

ISBIN (Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure Network) is a network established in 2023, that integrates several large-scale research infrastructures in Spain, such as the ICTS "Red de Laboratorios de RMN de Biomoléculas (R-LRB)", which includes the CCiTUB NMR laboratory, the Alba synchrotron and the 200 kV cryo-microscope at IBMB-CSIC.

Managed by the CCiTUB and coordinated scientifically by PhD. M. Pons from the University of Barcelona, ISBIN aims to align these infrastructures, facilitate access to users, serve as a key element in advancing scientific development in Spain.
