New diffuse Reflection (DRIFT) accessory. Molecular Spectroscopy.

The Molecular Spectroscopy Unit has developed a new diffuse Reflection (DRIFT) accessory coupled to the Perkin Elmer Frontier Infrared Spectrometer. This accessory allows working in the near, medium and far infrared ranges (8000 to 220 cm-1).

It is used for the analysis of solid samples that can´t be manipulated at all. Liquids adsorbed on solids can also be analyzed.

It differs from the Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) accessory, also available at CCiTUB [+] , in that in the latter, a small amount of solid is needed on a diamond surface and pressure is applied so that the sample is completely in contact with the diamond. For liquid or pasty samples, it is only necessary to place a drop on the diamond.

On the other hand, the DRIFT accessory allows the sample to be placed in a bucket where it is not subjected to any type of pressure or manipulation. It also has abrasive surfaces that allow scratching samples and obtain the infrared spectrum of its surface.

We are currently working on the quantitative analysis of solid and liquid samples.
