Upgrade of 800Mhz and 600Mhz NMR equipment

The Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona update the 800 MHz and 600 MHz magnetic resonance spectrometers of its NMR laboratory, thanks to the grant ICT2022-007829 awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The funding enables the following improvements:

800 MHz Spectrometer

Replacement of the cryoprobe with a new helium-cooled one with direct detection and optimized for the detection of 13C and 15N nuclei. The features of the new cryoprobe, combined with the relatively good dispersion of carbon and nitrogen, will allow to obtain NMR spectra with greater sensitivity and reduce overlap, enabling more in-depth studies of intrinsically disordered proteins and monoclonal antibodies.

600 MHz Spectrometer

Replacement of the cryoprobe with a new helium-cooled one optimized for proton detection, as well as the replacement of the current console with a state-of-the-art Avance NEO.

The new console will facilitate the transferability of high-field NMR experiments between the various nodes of the ICTS Biomolecules NMR Laboratory of Barcelona (R-LRB), where both equipments are also available under competitive open access.

These improvements, along with the recent arrival of unique equipment such as the 1 Ghz NMR, significantly enhance the capabilities of the ICTS infrastructure.

Availability of new equipment

The cryoprobe and console of the Bruker 600 MHz spectrometer were installed before last summer and the equipment is available to users. The cryoprobe of the Bruker 800 MHz spectrometer is in the process of being installed and is expected to be made available to users early next year.

Funding

The upgrades to the facilities have been fully funded by the "Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación" through the call for the Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS) and within the framework of the 2022 Recovery and Resilience Plan for the promotion of Scientific and Technical Research. This grant granted the NMR laboratory of the Scientific and Technological Centres of the University of Barcelona funding worth 792,360 euros for the updating of the 800 and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers.
