Microscopy, cytometry and genomic techniques involved in a study to mitigate lupus nephritis

PhD. E. Castaño, head of the Biology Bellvitge laboratory of the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB), collaborates in the research led by Dr. Torras (UB and IDIBELL), which shows, in two in vivo studies, that Hybri protein can mitigate lupus nephritis caused by systemic lupus erythematosus. This disease is an autoimmune disorder that can cause tissue damage and inflammation of the kidney. The result of this research may favour the use of Hybri protein as a maintenance therapy.

The article That collects the results of this research has been published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences and has as co-authors also researchers from IDIBELL, the Faculty of Medicine of Bellvitge Campus and Vall Hebron Hospital.

In this study several techniques have been used available in the laboratory: cytometry techniques (for the analysis of the different populations in peripheral blood); microscopy (for the images of immunohistochemistry and renal immunofluorescence); genomics (for studies of gene expression) and the use of the multiplate reader by ELISA kits. In addition, Dr. Castaño has contributed with her expertise in the subsequent analysis of low-density arrays and phenotyping.
