New spectrometer in the Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) laboratory

The Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona have at their disposal a new equipment in the laboratory of the isotopic mass spectrometry laboratory (IRMS), which will allow to offer from now on a better service as well as new benefits.

Its funding comes from the FEDER 2019 call for the acquisition of scientific equipment and has been made possible thanks to the collaboration between the CCiTUB and PhD. Albert Solé, coordinator of the MAIMA research group at the University of Barcelona.

This equipment with two different configurations is already qualified for the operation and provision of service and therefore, at the disposal of the users of the laboratory of Spectrometry of masses of isotopic relation (IRMS), located in the historical building of the CCiTUB in Lluís Solé i Sabarís street 1-3.

Specifications

The equipment is a MAT253Plus isotopic mass spectrometer from Thermo Fisher Scientific. It has two different configurations:

• GB-Precon-IRMS (GasBench II, Precon)
• GC-IRMS (Trace1310, GCIsolink II)

In addition to the measurements of the isotopic ratios of the most common light elements (13C / 12C, 15N / 14N, 2H / 1H, 18O / 16O) in gaseous / liquid samples and in specific compound, the equipment has the capacity to:

1. Measure isotopomers of N2O molecules (analyzing δ15Nα and δ15Nβ in the Nβ-Nα-O molecule).
2. Possibility of measuring isotopic ratios of 37Cl / 35Cl and 81Br / 79Br in halogenated organic compounds
