Exhibition "Un passeig pel nanomón"

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala Hypatia.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

Attendees will be able to enjoy contemplating images of different nanoobjects captured by instruments that have become the "eyes of the nanoman".

Exhibition "Món nano: l'increïble món dels insectes"

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala Hypatia.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

In this exhibition, tiny structures can be seen that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The exhibition is based on the micro and nanostructural analysis of different insects. Thus, the ommatidia that make up the eyes, the small hairs of some wings, the protuberances of others or the interior of a sectioned antenna of a cute bee can be observed, among other examples. Also on display are high-magnification images of everyday things, such as glitter, a grain of sea sand or human hair. In them we observe details that, without this microscopic vision, would have gone unnoticed.

Workshops

Electron Microscopy, Diffraction and Atoms (LENS-MIND Group, IN2UB)

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala Hypatia.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

The operation of transmission electron microscopy will be explained by analogy with a homemade "diffractor". This device is used to teach children that the thickness of very small objects can be measured by diffraction, this fact will be exemplified when we show them that they can measure the thickness of their hair. On the other hand, going further, we explain that by taking advantage of the wavelength of electrons we can see the crystalline structures of materials.

From the supermarket to home(CCiTUB)

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala Hypatia.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

We will show some of the products and applications of nanotechnology already present in the market. Through simple and easy-to-understand experiments, we aim to bring the possibilities offered by nanotechnology closer to society. We will show attendees that nanotechnology is already present in everyday life through products that already contain nanotechnological applications, such as superhydrophobicity, ferrofluids or anti-fog materials, among others.

The wonders of nano gold (IQAC_CSIC)

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala Hypatia.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

Gold has always fascinated us since ancient times. At present, its fascination has changed, we have gone from admiring its brilliance and purity to admiring its nano properties that vary its color and they open up enormous possibilities in different sectors, highlighting the potential in the world of nanomedicine.

Other workshops

Atomitza't

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala ALFA.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

By: Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry. Faculty of Chemistry.

Materialitza't

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA. Sala ALFA.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

This workshop is designed so that the visitor, attracted by everything surrounding Materials Science and Engineering, can interact with the different materials on display. At the same time, there will be, with some examples, a historical visualization of how some everyday object has evolved, thanks to science and scientists.

Escape Room Ginna (ELECMI)

Place: 26 APRIL 11:30-14h. COSMOCAIXA.
Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

Humanity has failed to meet the challenges set out in the 2100 agenda, which puts us all in a very compromised situation. The aim of these challenges was to address three major problems affecting the earth: the lack of energy for the entire population; problems with food and water supplies in various parts of the planet, biodiversity and ecosystems. That's why Ginna, head of the 3RTS100 nanotechnology lab, has been working very hard for years to find a solution to these problems. This laboratory is very special, it is the only one that barely measures a square micrometer and in it Ginna, thanks to its incredible microscopes, has prepared reports that will allow to carry out a plan of rapid action to solve these problems.

GARA: L’energia que ens envolta (IREC)

Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

Get to know "Gara and the energy that surrounds us" (FECYT project), an exhibition project of innovative scientific dissemination on energy and energy sustainability aimed at non-specialized audiences. We will bring you closer to the different areas of IREC’s research on energy and its relationship to sustainable development goals.

APP PARADOX (FACULTAT FÍSICA/IN2UB)

Place: 27 APRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

In this game, the user controls a door that separates two chambers with a gas. As the individual gas particles approach the door, the player must open and close it quickly to allow only the fast particles to pass in one direction and only those that move slowly in the other. In doing so, the player creates a temperature imbalance between the two chambers (and a decrease in gas entropy!). This imbalance is then used as a source of energy to drive a car. The car must reach the finish line on a road full of obstacles - tombs and barrels slowing down - and prizes - rubies - before the Monster catches it! The game is based on Maxwell's demon paradox, proposed by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1867. The paradox, formulated as a mental experiment, suggests a possible violation of the second law of thermodynamics by a tiny being — the demon. which could measure the velocity of particles in a gas and decide whether to open or close a door to separate the rapids from the lenses. Due to the kinetic nature of the temperature, as a result of its actions the demon would cause one chamber to heat up and the other to cool down. This process would decrease the total entropy of the gases, in apparent violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This paradox opened the door to a statistical interpretation of the second law and stimulated the relationship between thermodynamics and information theory.

Trenquem el sostre de cristall

Lloc: 27 ABRIL 10:00-14h. CC PERE QUART.

Why so few?
This is the question that Alice Rossi asked herself in 1965 when she looked at the role of women in the world of science as a sociologist. Thus was born the studies in science and gender. How have we progressed? How are we today and what are our challenges?
In the talk "Trenquem el sostre de cristall" we will shed light on the names of some scientific protagonists throughout history, analyze some aspects of the gender bias present in science today and work together with workshop participants to break the glass ceiling.
