The CCiTUB have fineshed their participation in the 10alamenos9 Festival

The CCiTUB have fineshed their participation in the 4th edition of the 10alamenos9 Festival, which has had, as its main headquarters in Barcelona, the CosmoCaixa from April 8 to 10.

Ten schools with more than 500 students have gone through CosmoCaixa facilities, and the activities have been, as always, the result of the collaboration of many institutions. There have been 18 seminars, 11 interviews to researchers, two exhibitions and 11 workshops where all the students have been able to experience with the nano world and the possibilities that it offers in their daily life.

The opening day was attended by the Vice-rector of Research, Doménec Espriu, the Director of CosmoCaixa, J. Portabella, the Director of the CCiTUB, J.R.Seoane and the specialist in company product management BASF, A. Coll.

Activities

This year, from the CCiTUB two new activities have been proposed, which have been added to the already existing ones: the game-exhibition "From Macro to Nano" and the "Challenge Nano" activity.

The exhibition "From Macro to Nano" is a collection of images obtained from the electronic microscopes (TEM and SEM) of the CCiTUB. Accompanying this exhibition we also had the exhibition, given by the CSIC, "A walk through the nanomundo". Both exhibitions have been complemented by a microscopy workshop conducted by the informant Mara Carmona, from the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (with the collaboration of Sergi Gómez) where students have been able to identify the images obtained by the different microscopes , ranging from stairs associated to the macro world (of the order of centimeters and millimeters) on stairs associated to the nano world (between 1 and 100 nm).

The "Challenge Nano" activity, in turn, has been to solve a global challenge for the future (food, environment, energy) through design thinking tools and knowledge of nanotechnology based on theory and experimentation. This experimental part has had three workshops on materials studied from the nanometric point of view that have been directed by researchers from the Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry of the UB and acclimated with murals ceded by the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB).

The rest of the activities consisted of demonstrations with nanotechnology products and augmented reality, seminars by researchers, as well as workshops related to the various fields of nanoscience.

The exhibitions at the Macaya Palace

Once the activities at CosmoCaixa have been finalized, the two photographic exhibitions have been transferred to the Palau Macaya on the occasion of the presentation of the “Asociación española para el avance la ciència” (AEAC), an entity whose objective is to promote social participation in the research.

The presentation ceremony, which was attended by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, president of the AEAC, was attended by Dr. Aránzazu Villuendas and Mr. Josep Solà, from the Unit of nanometric techniques, who explained to the audience the images of the exhibitions, and Dr. Jordi Díaz, from the same Unit and coordinator of the Festival 10alamenos9, who has participated in one of the two round tables to discuss the evolution of science, dissemination and the efforts of scientists to bring the scientific culture closer to the population.

The 10alamenos Festival9

This year, the Festival, which has been sponsored by BASF and Lubrizol -Lipotec, has added new cities such as Seville, Malaga, El Entrego (Asturias) and Beasain (Guipúzcoa) to the cities participating in previous years (Barcelona, Valencia , Saragossa, Huesca, Bellaterra and Madrid). The number of research centers involved - more than forty - has been exceeded, many of which are benchmarks in various areas of nanotechnology in Spain and in Europe.

The Festival is an activity that is still underway during the month of April and in total, the participation of more than 15,000 people is expected between general public, students and professionals.
