New Milestone DMA-80 mercury analyser

The Scientific and Technological Centres of University of Barcelona (CCiTUB) make available to their users a new Milestone DMA-80 mercury analyser. The equipment was acquired at the end of 2017 in collaboration with PhD. Carolina Sanpera Trigueros from the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Science.

This new analyser is an instrument that allows Hg analysis in concentrations of trace and ultratrace of all kind of samples, both liquid and solid, in a direct way. The technique is based in the thermal decomposition of the sample, the Hg retention in a gold amalgamator, the Hg desorption of the amalgamator and a final measure by atomic absorption.

The main advantages respect to other techniques of Hg measurement available in the Unit are:
- Time saving and simplification of the procedure of the analysis because it is not necessary to perform the digestion stage of the sample that, in most cases, represents the longest and most laborious part.
- Elimination of the possibilities of analyte loss during the digestion procedure.
- Reactive and laboratory material savings necessary to digestion.
- Possibility of measuring lower concentrations since dilution factor introduced is eliminated if it works digesting the samples.

The equipment is placed in the Unit of Metal Analysis (ICP-MS, ICP-OES, FRX, AA), located in the CCiTUB building of Campus Diagonal Portal del Coneixement (Knowledge Portal).
