21st aptitude essay on organic elementary analysis

PhD. Isidre Casals (1), Mrs. Rosa Maria Marimon (2)(3), PhD. Pilar Teixidor (2)(4) and Mrs. Pili Rubio, will participate tomorrow in the meeting to discuss the results of the 21st aptitude essay on organic elementary analysis which will be held at the ‘Institut Universitari Mixte de Tecnologia Química’ (ITQ) located at the Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València.

The idea of the essays emerged 21 years ago because of the need to guarantee the reliability of the results from the chemical analysis made in the laboratories. It was an initiative of the CCiTUB, headed by PhD. Isidre Casals, the Faculty of Chemistry and the Laboratory of Elementary Analysis of the CSIC and nowadays participate about 50 laboratories from all over Europe. Although at first just the data of the elementary analysis of the samples were studied, Mrs. Rosa Maria Marimon and PhD. Pilar Teixidor from the CCiTUB saw the value to doing it with isotopic data and introducing the results into the study.

The evaluation and the report of the results of the analysis are done by the Laboratories of preparation of materials for Quality Control (MAT Control) of the Department of Analytic Chemistry of the University of Barcelona, directed by Dr Angels Sahuquillo, teacher of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytic Chemistry.

Every year, 3 samples are studied in order to be evaluated. The first one is chosen by the MAT Control itself and it is totally unknown and confidential by the participating laboratories. The other two are chosen in the meeting to discuss the results. This year a fertilizer and an animal hair were analysed in addition of the unknown sample.

The results of these essays are used in the Units of the CCiTUB as indicators of quality. We remember that since 2005, the CCiTUB have the Certificación (certification) ISO 9001, which guarantees that the Centres Científics i Tecnològics de la UB (Scientific and Technological Centres of the UB) have implemented a system to manage the quality based in the 9001 ISO Standard that satisfies also the requirements of the good Manufacturing Standard (GM) for activities to support private and public research, provision of analytical, scientific, technical and other services.
