The Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB) are expanding their range of services for biomedical research with the addition, at the In Vivo Experimentation and Research Committee Support Unit, of the EchoMRI® 100, a device specifically designed for non‑invasive quantitative analysis of body composition in small animal models.
This system, based on Quantitative Magnetic Resonance (QMR) technology, is specially designed for in vivo studies in conscious mice. The equipment enables rapid and precise quantitative measurements of fat, lean mass, and water without the need for anesthesia or invasive procedures. The process is fully automated and can be completed in under 30 seconds.
The EchoMRI® 100 stands out for its high precision, sensitivity, and reproducibility, making it particularly valuable for longitudinal studies. Since measurements can be repeated on the same animal without affecting its welfare, researchers can reliably monitor changes in body composition over time. This reduces the impact of experimental procedures on the models, contributing to improved animal welfare and the application of the refinement principle of the 3Rs.
The incorporation of the EchoMRI® 100 enhances CCiTUB’s capabilities in biomedical and preclinical research areas such as obesity and metabolic diseases, aging and sarcopenia, endocrinology, immunology, among others.
The equipment is now available at the Animal Experimentation Unit on the Diagonal Campus, located at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences.
