Presentation of the new advanced microscopy space at the CCiTUB

On 21 May, the CCiTUB presented the new advanced microscopy space at the University of Barcelona, a strategic infrastructure that will soon be available to the research community.

The event took place in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Biology and was attended by the Vice-Rector for Research, Dr. J. García; the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Dr. R. Gironés; and the Director of the Scientific and Technological Centers, Dr. J. F. Sangüesa. All of them highlighted the key role of the CCiTUB in securing funding, incorporating state-of-the-art scientific equipment, and creating environments that foster high‑impact research.

The session included the presentation of new singular instruments, such as the FIB-SEM and SBF-SEM (the latter provided by The Francis Crick Institute, introduced by Eva Prats, Head of the Microscopy and Related Techniques Unit. The programme also featured several specialised talks on innovative applications in advanced microscopy:

  • Ultrastructure at the tissue scale: volumeEM and compatible technologies — C. Bosch (ALBA Synchrotron)
  • Targeting protein condensates in Plasmodium: The malaria parasite Achilles heel — X. Fernández (IBEC, ISGlobal)
  • The Cryo-EM Revolution in Membrane Protein Structural Biology — B. Herguedas (University of Zaragoza)

The new space will strengthen capabilities in high‑resolution characterisation and imaging techniques, exemplifying the value of institutional collaboration in the development of cutting‑edge scientific infrastructures.

These new facilities, which will integrate existing services and unique equipment, will be inaugurated next semester and will contribute to advancing multidisciplinary, high‑excellence research.
