New equipment in the Mechanics laboratory for advanced solutions in 3D design and manufacturing

The Mechanics Laboratory, of the CCiTUB has recently acquired new equipment, including filament and resin 3D printers, a CO2 laser cutter and a CNC router.

This new equipment will reinforce the laboratory’s existing facilities and enable it to expand its range of services by offering more advanced solutions in the design and manufacture of experimental 3D models, and a greater degree of precision in the cutting processes thanks to the laser cutter and the CNC router.

These features will support researchers who need customized components for their research.

With the new equipment, the laboratory is expected to offer a more agile, efficient and higher-quality service, improving access to manufacturing tools and promoting innovation in research projects.

Characteristics of the new equipment

Thread printers:
  • Ender 5: It allows printing at temperatures up to 300ºC and speeds of up to 250 mm/s. It incorporates an improved motion system driven by a high-precision step-by-step engine. It is particularly well-suited to printing with flexible materials. This provides powerful and uniform extrusion force.

  • Sigmax R19: It has an independent double extrusion technology, which allows the same piece to be printed simultaneously, using both heads. It has modes that allow working with soluble supports to create complex structures, and it can print two different materials at the same time, combining their properties.

  • Prusa XL: Its large volume allows to print large objects in one piece, making the workflow agile. Among the characteristics that make it a unique equipment, the presence of five independent printing heads stands out, which allow printing with five different colors or materials.

Resin printer:
  • Formlabs 3: This printer is characterized by its ability to create prototypes on a larger scale and manufacture final parts of industrial quality at an affordable price. It uses linear lighting and a flexible tank to turn liquid resin into solid objects.

Other equipment
  • 130-150W CO2 laser cutter of 1300x900: The CO2 laser cutter is widely used for cutting and engraving a variety of materials, including wood, marble, organic glass, glass, acrylic, textiles, paper, leather, rubber, ceramics and other non-metallic materials. Its high-speed motors reduce engraving and cutting times. Its high-quality rails allow for highly precise and durable engraving and cutting.

  • 3-axis CNC router + horizontal rotating axis: This equipment incorporates a tool for machining work using ferrite booting, including a rotary piece with various cutting edges, known as milling cutter. Different types of materials can be machined, such as iron casting, wood, steel, synthetic materials and acrylics. Typically, these machining is performed on flat or curved surfaces, which can be tuned or roughed.
