The XRD Technology of CCiTUB determines the crystalline structure of a compound consisting in molecules that act against the influenza A virus

Dr. Mercè Font-Bardia of the DRX Technology of CCiTUB has determined the crystalline structure of a compound consisting in molecules that act against influenza virus A using a single-crystal diffractometer Bruker D-8 Venture. The origin of these molecules with antiviral effect is a doctoral research of Matias Rey Carrizo and Marta Barniol Xicota, from the group of Professor Santiago Vazquez of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona [+]. The research has been published in the prestigious scientific journal Angewandte Chemie. The abstract of the paper is the following:

"The synthesis, chemical trapping, and dimerization of a highly pyramidalized alkene is reported. Its dimer is a unique nonacycle featuring three planar cyclobutane rings, four cyclopentane rings, and four cyclohexane rings in boat conformations. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed a H–H distance between the flagpole hydrogen atoms of 1.999 Å and a separation of 2.619 Å between the two flagpole carbon atoms. The three cyclobutane rings of the dimer were thermally stable."
