The CCiTUB invited to the 18a Setmana de la Ciència a Catalunya inauguration ceremony

The CCiTUB were invited to the 18a Setmana de la Ciència a Catalunya inauguration ceremony and the conference “Supercomputació, una eina per a la ciència” held by Dr. Mateo Valero, director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centre Nacional de Supercomputació, which took place yesterday in the Palau del Parlament.

The event was chaired by Mrs. Anna Simó, first vice-president of the Parlament who remarked that the week of science is a way of bringing science closer to society. Afterwards intervened Dr. Antoni Esteve, President of the Fundació Catalana per a la Investigació i la Innovació (FCRi), who pointed that there are important assets both in the public and the private sectors which are going to allow Catalunya to be a center of generation of knowledge, always counting with the contribution that young people make in the process.

The event continued with the conference “Supercomputació, un instrument per la ciència” held by Dr. Mateo Valero and Mr. Enric Claverol, FCRi director, introduced him.

In the conference, Dr. Valero, telecommunications engineer, professor at the UPC and director of the BSC, made an overview of the BSC history and the projects they are carrying out: the project Alya Red to simulate a human heart which has received the prize to the best science video of the world, the project Mont-Blanc which has the objective of designing a new kind of architecture for supercomputing that will bring a higher performance with lower consumption and many others.

Dr. Valero also spoke about the need to promote engineering in Catalunya and the risk of losing engineers, about the importance of the excellence in investigation but very specially about the importance of the ‘relevance’ in his investigation and the need to communicate, to convey to the society what researchers are doing.

The 18a Setmana de la Ciència a Catalunya will take place from 15 to 24 of November and assist, among others, the Universitat de Barcelona. For more information make a click on the following link [+]
