Histopathology under quality norms

Objectives Date Registration Location

 Objectives

The pathological anatomy consists in the morphological study of the organic and tissue structures for identifying, describing and if possible, to diagnose the possible alterations. The anatomopathological assessment comprises macroscopic pathological anatomy and histopathology studies.

The histopathological examination requires stopping the post-mortem processes, obtaining transparent samples and coloring differentially the subcellular structures. Each one of these steps is an alteration of the natural state of the sample and is capable to introduce artifacts; on the other hand each of them has a decisive influence on the final quality of the preparation. A good diagnosis depends of a correctly technical preparation.

A crucial point is to maintain correct sample identification in each moment.

Finally will proceed to the observations, corrective development of which includes technical aspects such as maintenance of the microscope, the establishment of a glossary, a systematic observation (codified or uncodified, longitudinal or individual, the establishment of methods for the quantification or semi-quantification and the observations register procedure) and other aspects such as the experience and the preparation of the observer and those factors that could lead to an erroneous interpretation.

A description has to be unbiased and permanent, whilst a diagnosis is a subjective interpretation and objet of evolution. In this sense, a crucial point to ensure quality in the practice of pathology is part of peer review by a second externally pathologist.
