NanoInventum 2022-23 Closing Day

Yesterday, Wednesday, May 31, the closing ceremony of NanoInventum took place at the Municipal Sports Center of Molins de Rei. Over 700 students from different schools throughout Catalonia participated in a scientific fair where they exhibited the nanorobot models created in class. These models are the culmination of the work carried out in the classrooms throughout the academic year as part of this educational project.

20 Primary schools from Catalonia have implemented the NanoInventum methodology during the year, facilitating the learning of nanotechnology for their students, who have ultimately designed nanorobots capable of addressing some of the challenges of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

At the closing ceremony, nearly 300 proposals were presented to the jury, composed of the delegate of the rector for Outreach Activities at the University of Barcelona, Gemma Marfany; the director of the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona(CCiTUB), Juan Fran Sangüesa; and the director of CESIRE (Center for Specific Pedagogical Resources to Support Innovation and Educational Research), Elisabet Aznar, among others.

The event, hosted by PhD.J.Díaz, CCiTUB nanometric techniques and coordinator of NanoInventum, was animated by science communicator Dani Jiménez. The highlight of the day was the creation of a giant human body using the participation of over 700 attending children and the assistance of drones, simulating how nanorobotics contributes to fighting bladder cancer.

The Awards

All schools have been awarded prizes in various categories, thanks to the contributions from different institutions such as the "Universitat de Barcelona, Museu de Ciències Naturals, ICMAB, IBEC, CosmoCaixa, Parc Científic de Barcelona, Hospital Vall d’Hebron, ICN2, Col·legi de Químics de Catalunya and CasioEDU". Awards were given for the best STEAM school, the most innovative school, the one that best addressed scientific outreach, the most artistic school, among others, highlighting the different areas that converge in the NanoInventum project.

About NanoInventum

NanoInventum is a project developed by the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB) in collaboration with the "Fundación Española de Ciencia y Tecnología (FECYT) i el Departament d’Educació de la Generalitat de Catalunya (CESIRE i STEAMcat)". Through teacher training, student experimental work with a kit of experiments (Nanoexplora), mentorship by nanotechnology experts (Nanoexperta), and creativity tools, NanoInventum focuses on teaching nanotechnology and addressing the sustainability challenges of the 2030 Agenda.

This year, the project has incorporated innovative scientific communication tools, such as the Quantumbot application, to work on the SDGs, as well as the presentation of proposals in comic format.
