Critical Raw Materials: The Petroleum of the 21st Century

The 21st century is marked by the expiration date of fossil fuels and the commitment to digitalization. These are highly demanding transitions in terms of raw material demand. We could say that the era of petroleum will give way to a new stage: the age of the Periodic Table.
We want to discuss the physical limits of these transformations: What do they imply in terms of raw materials? How many resources would be needed to complete and maintain them? Does this new era have an expiration date? The circular economy is often presented as the solution, but is the circular economy compatible with the laws of thermodynamics? Can we recycle the resources we put into circulation infinitely and without losses?
We want to talk about all this and much more with Dr. Abel Ortego from ICIRCE-UNIZAR, where he participates in R&D projects on circular economy, energy efficiency, and sustainable mobility.
