The CCiTUB collaborate from the University of Barcelona with the Orfeu project to identify those affected by Covid-19

The Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia has approved the activation of phase 2 of the Covid-19 Mass Detection Program with the incorporation of the university laboratories, among them the University of Barcelona.

To make it possible to carry out the planned 52,000 tests, the UB has advanced the purchase of two latest-generation equipments to perform real time PCR . Specifically, two QuantStudio ™ 7 Pro Real Time PCR Systems from Applied Biosystems have been purchased and will be located, once the Orfeo program is completed, in the Genomics (Campus Diagonal) and Biology (Campus Bellvitge) units of the CCiTUB and will be available to all our users.

The Director of the CCiTUB, Dr. Seoane, has been part of the commission of the University of Barcelona to iniciate the Orfeu at our University and two of the specialists in PCRs of the CCiTUB, Dr. Ramon Seminago (Genomics Unit-Diagonal) and Dr. Esther Castaño (Biology Unit-Bellvitge ) have been part of the technical commission providing their knowledge and will go on till the end of the project.

Real-time PCR can amplify, evaluate, detect, and sensitively and specifically quantify nucleic acid targets. The equipment purchased offers multiplexing capability, flexibility, sensitivity, high quality and reliability. They include additional smart features to improve efficiency, analyze data, and help streamline workflow.

These equipments have systems of multiple excitation with combination of filters to allow the maximum multiplexación and chemical flexibility to be able to be used in different applications. Some of the main features of this new equipment will be biological and biomedical research applications such as gene expression studies, genotyping studies, pathogen detection or analysis of different RNAs (such as microRNAs, pri-miRNAs, long non-coding RNAs).
