The NanoEduca 2018 Poster/Video Contest awards

On May 9th, the closing and awards ceremony of the 2018 NanoEduca Poster / Video contest was held in the Paranimf of the historic building of the University of Barcelona, within the framework of the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival 10alamenos9.

In the opening ceremony participated PhD. Francisco Ciruela (Delegate of the UB rector), PhD. José Ramón Seoane (CCiTUB director), PhD. Àlex Argemí (Head of communications of ICN2), PhD. Gema García (Vice Deputy of the UAB), PhD. Júlio Pérez (CESIRE director) and Dr. Jordi Díaz who was the Chairman of the event (CCiTUB technician and Nanodivulga UB coordinator).

The winners

Among all the submitted proposals, the jury considered as the best the video entitled “NANOENCAPSULACIÓ”. Regarding the poster competition, the winner was the poster entitled "LIVE YOUR MEMORIES", which deals with applications of graphene in the field of medicine. The members of the winning groups were awarded individually, and in addition, the institutes to which they belong (INS Domènec Perramon and INS Sant Andreu) were awarded with a NanoKit by kindness of the BASF company.

The Challenge

This poster and video competition was aimed at students of secondary schools. The students had to make a video which responds to a question or challenge that would highlight the applications and implications of nanotechnology in the areas of: art, science, technology, daily life, health, environment, etc. Also, each center had to present a scientific poster and defend it in a court.

This year, 50 institutes participated in the training sessions for teachers, and 12 of these presented the final work to the closing day.

The educational centers that participated were: Institut Baldiri Guilera (El Prat de Llobregat), Institut Domènec Perramon (Arenys de Munt), Institut Front Marítim (Barcelona), Institut Gorgs (Cerdanyola del Vallès), Institut Joan Brossa (Barcelona), Institut Manuel Blancafort (La Garriga), Institut Mercè Rodoreda (L’Hospitalet de Llobregat), Institut Miquel Martí i Pol (Cornellà de llobregat), Institut Puig Castellar (Sta. Coloma de Gramenet), Institut Sant Andreu (Sant Andreu de la barca), Institut Vallès (Sabadell), INS XXV Olimpíada (Barcelona).

Closing

The closing ceremony was given by Dr. Xavier Triadó (Director ICE-UB), who encouraged attending students to become interested in the scientific career and start their studies at the University of Barcelona.

NanoEduca Program

The NanoEduca program, developed by the Scientific and Technological Centers (CCiTUB), the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) and NanoDivulga UB, together with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), CESIRE and the UAB was created in order to familiarize the teaching staff of the secondary schools with the tools, language and processes of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and to create modules and learning workshops that can be applied in class. The program is coordinated by Dr. Jordi Díaz and during the first three editions, have been trained more than 2,000 students from more than one hundred centers in Catalonia, and it will soon arrive to the Basque Country and Madrid. In order to guarantee the continuity of NanoEduca, the project has been included in the official "Precipita" platform of crowdfunding.
