New Confocal Microscopes at the CCiTUB

Recently, the Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona has acquired three Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope with high sensitivity, spectral detection and fully automatized, with multiple laser lines, high resolution and high speed scanner, high sensitivity detectors, motorized microscope, software for automation and Design of experiments and accessories necessary for the development of advanced applications of optical microscopy.

These equipment will be located in the three locations of the Advanced Optical Microscopy Unit at the Biomedical Campuses of the Universitat de Barcelona: Campus Medicina Clínic - August Pi i Sunyer, Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus, Diagonal Campus Knowledge Portal and will provide service to more than 500 researchers from the field of biomedicine, both at a clinical, basic and translational level, in life sciences and biomaterials. The extension of these units will benefit the institutions of the UB campus as well as other centers, companies or private institutions.

These laser scanning confocal microscopes represent a qualitative leap in image quality, speed, with multiple advanced applications. The main applications in Biomedical Research of these new equipment are:
- High resolution multidimensional image
- Automated microscopy
- Live cell microscopy
- High speed and sensitivity microscopy
- High Content Screening
- Modular system that allows for expansion in the future

The Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope is a fundamental daily tool in Life Sciences research, since it allows performing functional images of biological systems with information at the molecular and physiological level, from cellular models, animals to samples of patients. It is therefore a key technology in the study of the mechanisms that participate in the development of diseases as well as in the study of new cell and pharmacological therapies.
