Installation of a direct detection camera electron microscope in CM30

Thanks to the collaboration between CCiTUB and Nanomegas SPRL, a MediPix direct-electron detection camera (Amsterdam Scientific Instruments) has been installed on the operative CM30 transmission electron microscope at the CCiTUB installations. This technology on the cutting edge provides the possibility of visualize beam-sensitive organic samples as well as to obtain the structure of pharmaceutical and/or biological compounds at high resolution. Such setup allow us to obtain reliable and accurate crystallography data with electron doses that can be as small as 10-4 electrons/Å2·s, which is not possible with normal CCD cameras because of the large electron doses needed to detect the electrons or the high exposure times that completely degrade the specimen in study.

To conclude, this equipment gives the biological and pharmaceutical groups a new innovative and interesting tool to take advantage of the transmission electron microscope properties.
