Escolab 2026

The Scientific and Technological Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB) participate in Escolab 2026 with a proposal of activities to bring science closer to Baccalaureate and ESO students.

Below is the list of activity proposals and the educational centers that will visit the CCiTUB laboratories this year.

Analyzing cells: The Flow Cytometry and Advanced Optical Microscopy laboratories offer 2-hour visits to their facilities located at the Bellvitge Campus of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona. During the visit, students will discover how cells from clinical or biomedical research samples can be maintained, visualized, quantified, and classified. They will also gain an understanding of how the equipment used to analyze these samples works—namely, flow cytometers and advanced optical microscopes. More information

From Biomacro to Biomicro: The In Vivo Experimentation, Advanced Optical Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, and Proteomics laboratories offer a 4.5-hour visit to the facilities located at the UB’s Medicina-Clínic Campus. During the visit, students will embark on a journey through the structures of life—from large-scale structures such as living organisms to the smallest ones, like proteins. They will explore organs, tissues, and cells using microscopy techniques, and analyze the structures of their components and the proteins within them. Students will also learn how to study the basic components of chemical reactions and how this knowledge can be used to identify markers of human diseases such as cancer, infertility, diabetes, and more. From the genome to the cell: Genomics and Flow Cytometry laboratories offer a visit in which students will be introduced to the techniques used for molecular and cellular characterization in biotechnology research laboratories. Current techniques for sequencing, nucleic acid and protein characterization, as well as tools for cell detection and purification, will also be briefly presented, along with their applications in research and healthcare. Life through the Microscope: TThe Advanced Optical Microscopy and Electron Microscopy laboratories at the UB’s Medicina-Clínic Campus offer a joint 2.5-hour visit to their facilities, taking students on a journey through science and technology inside cells and tissues. From how the phenomenon of fluorescence is used to label and visualize cellular structures and observe live processes such as mitosis, to how the interior of a cell and its organelles can be observed—not with light, but with electrons. A walk through the chemical analysis laboratories: : The laboratories of NMR, Infrared Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry, and Raman Spectroscopy offer a 3-hour guided visit to the facilities located at the Diagonal South Campus of the University of Barcelona. The visit is designed to provide a first contact and insight into the interaction between scientific/technological education and the University. Through the activity, students will learn about the daily operations of various chemical laboratories that serve both the scientific community and industry, with explanations of the available instrumental techniques and demonstrations applied to different types of samples. During the activity, the same molecule will be characterized using all four techniques to explore the type of information each one provides, as well as the advantages and limitations of each depending on the problem to be solved.
